When you run a business, it is important to ensure that everything is streamlined and running as efficiently as possible; after all, business productivity depends on it.

When it comes to your network cables, there is no exception.

Here at A1 Communications, we are the experts when it comes to network cabling. With more than 25 years of industry experience setting up office networks in Melbourne and across Australia, we have seen a vast amount of change; today, there are numerous cabling options to suit a variety of different business needs. There is no longer a ‘one size fits all’ solution, but rather a suite of options that can be tailored to suit your individual business needs.

What exactly is network cabling?

It may sound like a simple question, but we find many of our clients are often confused with regards to what network cabling actually is. Technical jargon can be hard to understand at the best of times, so we understand why it can often seem confusing!

To put it simply, networking cabling is the act of connecting multiple network devices together via a data transfer medium (i.e. connecting a network of devices). Devices that may need connecting include servers, computers, VoIP systems, phones, printers and so forth; it varies greatly from business to business.

What type of cabling can we supply and install?

In an office setting, ‘structured cabling’ is the term given to the complete system of cabling and associated hardware. This infrastructure is concerned with data transfer – whether it’s between computers or connecting the office’s telephone system.

The type of cabling required depends on the devices being used and your business requirements; different situations call for different methods and cabling types.

Ethernet cabling. The most widely installed local area network (LAN) technology, Ethernet is used to connect a network of devices within an office. Modern day Ethernet cables allow for high speed data transfer, which is essential when it comes to today’s internet speeds and communication demands. The type of cables used in Ethernet connects vary – however twisted pair cabling is the most common.

Twisted pair cabling. Twisted pair cables emerged in the 1990s to replace the older coaxial cables and quickly became the standard for Ethernet cabling. Consisting of up to eight wires wound together, twisted pair cables are considered an economical option for Ethernet cabling and are therefore used in office networks across the country.

Fibre optic cabling. The latest in cabling technology, fibre optic cables make it possible to transmit data faster than ever before. Often used as part of Ethernet network cabling, fibre optic cables are suitable for transmitting sophisticated data and video signals – as well as traditional data such as telephone and fax.
